4 Surprising Reasons You Wake Up Tired and How to Avoid them

I've been increasingly experiencing sleeplessness and decided to read more on it, and share my findings. I hope the information here helps others out there that are finding it hard to get some shut-eye!

When you can't sleep, you know it. What about when you can, but you still wake up feeling tired or you're groggy again a few hours later? What's that about? All too often, it turns out, the problem is one that doesn't keep you awake but does sabotage your sleep in more subtle ways, so the hours you spend in bed don't refresh and revitalize you the way they should. Here are four signs that you have a sleep problem that's secretly stealing your rest, with some ways to help gain fitful sleep.

You toss and turn or wake up often to use the bathroom:

It's a symptom of:
Nocturia. This is the official name for waking up in the middle of the night to use the bathroom. Normally, our bodies have a natural process that concentrates urine while we sleep so we can get six to eight hours without waking. What to do: Try not to drink any liquids for at least three hours before going to bed, see if that helps. This includes foods with a lot of liquid in them, like soups or fruit. Lower your coffee and tea consumption; the acids in coffee and tea can irritate the bladder. Try not to drink alcohol before bed, which functions as a diuretic as well as a bladder irritant. Go to the bathroom last thing before getting in bed and relax long enough to fully empty your bladder. It's also important to get checked for conditions that cause urination problems.

You move all over the bed or wake tangled in the covers:

It's a symptom of: That kind of movement indicates restless leg syndrome or a related problem, periodic limb movement disorder.
How it interrupts sleep: The restlessness can prevent you from sinking into deep sleep, or a muscle jerk can wake or partially rouse you from deep sleep.
What to do: Try making dietary changes to make sure you're getting enough iron and B vitamins, particularly folic acid, since iron and folate deficiency have been linked to restless leg syndrome. Red meat, spinach, and other leafy greens are good sources of both nutrients, but you may want to take supplements as well.

You have bad breath in the morning and feel groggy:

What it's a symptom of: Mouth breathing and snoring both disrupt sleep by compromising breathing. Look for drool on your pillow or in the corners of your mouth. If you have a partner, ask him or her to monitor you for snoring, gasping, or overloud breathing.
How it interrupts sleep: Mouth breathing and snoring can interrupt sleep because you're not getting enough air to fully relax. Severe snoring -- particularly when accompanied by gasps or snorts -- can also indicate a more serious problem with obstructed breathing during sleep.
What to do: Train yourself to breathe through your nose. Try snore-stopping nose strips, available over the counter at the drugstore, or use saline nasal spray to irrigate your nasal passages. Experiment with sleep positions; most people have a tendency to snore and breathe through their mouths when sleeping on their backs. Use pillows to prop yourself on your side.
If you typically drink alcohol in the evening, try not to. Alcohol (a sedative) relaxes the muscles of the nose and throat, contributing to snoring. It also makes you sleep more deeply initially and is dehydrating.

You experience broken Sleep throughout the night:

It's a symptom of: Getting out of sync with night and day. Irregular sleep patterns, staying up late under bright lights, working a shift schedule, using computers and other devices in bed, and having too much light in the room while you sleep can disrupt your body's natural sleep-wake cycle.
Why it interrupts sleep: The onset of darkness triggers production of the hormone melatonin, which tells the brain it's time to sleep. Conversely, when your eyes register light, it shuts off melatonin production and tells you it's time to wake up.
What to do: Try to get on a regular sleep schedule that's not too far off from the natural cycle of night and day -- and preferably the same schedule all week. (Experts recommend 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. or 11 p.m. to 7 a.m. every night, but that's just a general outline.) If you struggle with not feeling alert in the morning, go outside and take a brisk walk in daylight to feel more awake; you'll find that it's much easier to fall asleep the following night.
As much as possible, banish all screens (TVs, computers, and iPads) for at least an hour before bed. Reading is much more sleep-inducing than looking at a lighted screen, but make sure your reading light isn't too bright and turn it so it doesn't shine in your eyes. Don't charge laptops, phones, cameras, and other devices in your bedroom unless you cover the light they give off.

Since noting these things and adjusting accordingly, I have started to sleep better again. YES to a great night's rest. Take control of your rest and sleep patterns to increase productivity and quality of life during the day!

Sleep well!

Beauty Rules For Red Lipstick this Winter

Beauties, A lot of us would love to wear the knockout red lipstick but we may feel uncomfortable or a bit wary. We can all play "The Red Lipstick Game" and here are some tips, tricks and rules of thumb to guide you! Wear that red pretties - and wear it with confidence xx

Use Liner
Choose a shade of red that matches your lipstick. It'll emphasize the color, prevent it from bleeding into lip lines, and help the color last longer!

Test Color on Lips
If that's not possible, dab the lipstick on the pad of one of your fingertips, which has lots of blood vessels — the color is closest to the actual hue of your lips.

Sample Berries
A bright red lip is definitely a look, so if you're hesitant about committing to full-force scarlet, try a berry hue: One with blue undertones will have the same smile-whitening effect as a classic red would. Don't be shy - When you don't want to fully commit to hot reds, you can enjoy Berry hues!

Avoid Gloss
A red gloss won't have the same coverage or intensity of pigment as a lipstick. It may appear red on your lips, but it won't change the look of your teeth.

A great place for inspiration for colors: - That's all I have for now Beauties. Enjoy wearing your "Reds!!!xo

7 Ways to be a Natural Beauty

We don’t need tons of time —or harsh chemicals—to get shiny, healthy hair and smoother skin. Just steal these gentle and natural back-to-basics moves to start looking and feeling your best.

Embolden Your Skin to Greater Heights of Radiance: Slice a few grapes in half and rub the cut sides over clean skin. “The fruit acids are natural exfoliators,” explains Regine Berthelot, head aesthetician at the Caudalie Vinotherapie Spa at The Plaza in New York City. We highly recommend you try Yamerra's Natural Facial Serum ($20 : online at

Incredibly nutrient-rich, restorative and energizing; Yamerra's Natural Facial Serum (2oz)

Wake up tired, puffy eyes: With a chilled eye cream (store yours in the fridge). Apply it from the outer corners of your eyes toward your nose. This helps drain excess fluid in the area. We recommend a homemade blend of: 1 ounce Jojoba oil, 5 drops Chamomile essential oil, 5 drops Rose essential oil.
Make your own homeopathic blend at home and store in a cool place. You can store small amount for everyday use in a dropper botttle

Combine essential oils with Jojoba oil and store in a one-ounce glass bottle with a dropper top. To Use: Apply 1 drop of the oil to your finger and gently smooth the oil beneath your eye and onto the area just beneath the brow bone. Do not apply oil directly to your eyelids.

Zap blemishes with two ingredients homeopaths have used for centuries: anti-inflammatory arnica and antibacterial tea tree oil. Find them at any Whole Foods Market.

Stay protected by applying a moisturizer with premium Shea butter before sunscreen; studies show the ingredient decreases the effect of UV radiation on skin and may help prevent sunburns. We like Yamerra's Home Sweet Home Honey Vanilla Hair and Body Butter, highly recommended for the Fall Season ($12 online:
Soothing, moisturizing and healing: (1$12)
Make a facial mask more effective by applying it right before you get out of a steamy bathroom, where steam from your shower opens pores so ingredients can penetrate. Smooth plain yogurt over your face after your shower, let it sit for about 10 minutes (sit somewhere where it can dry), then rinse your face.
A plain yogurt mask will do wonders for your skin! So quick, easy and affordable.
Create tousled waves with this trick from stylist John Masters: dissolve 1 tablespoon sea salt in a spray bottle filled with 8 ounces warm spring water, then add 10 drops of organic lavender oil; shake well, then spritz on damp hair and let it air-dry.

Strengthen hair with a mayo mask (its cholesterol plumps the cuticle). Comb 1/2 cup mayo through wet hair, wait 15 minutes, and rinse with cool water.

Hope these tips help you as they have helped me! Love,

Wellness ALERT- Your Brain: On Carbs!

A low carbohydrate recommendation for both brain and total body health is supported by both history and science.  According to neurologist David Perlmutter, MD, eating carbohydrates and sugar over time may do more harm than simply leading you to pack on some extra pounds. In his new book Grain Brain, which hits September 17th, Dr. Perlmutter attributes — with the research to back it up — the consumption of wheat, gluten, and sugar to a slew of negative health effects including Parkinson’s, multiple sclerosis, and even Alzheimer’s.

“Historically, humans have never had access to any meaningful dietary carbohydrate; throughout our 2.5 million years on this planet, the foods we consumed were either high fat and protein animal products, providing the most efficient sources of calories, or high fiber, as well as extremely low carbohydrate plants and plant products.” In other words, we were not built to intake a high level of carbohydrates. We were designed to be on low-carb, high-fat intake.

The other question this immediately brings up is one of energy — we need carbs and sugar for fuel, right? In reality, the most efficient brain "super fuel" is fat, allowing far better ATP production with reduced production of damaging free radicals,” he says. Indulging in a wheat-and-sugar-laden diet can cause "dramatic and clearly detrimental changes in the brain,” says Dr. Perlmutter. “Even slight elevations of blood sugar — well below the threshold for diagnosing diabetes — very directly predicts the future risk of developing dementia, as was recently described in the prestigious New England Journal of Medicine."

While a lot of us LOVE Carbs (I have a sweet tooth that really has no bounds too), its is important to focus on doing what is good and right for the brain and body. I may never fully cut out sweets from my diet but instead of having it everyday, I definitely opt for twice a month or on very special occasions. Be truly "sweet to yourself", balance and regulate your carbohydrate intake and your body will thank you for it.
